Cure for Stuttering?

I have a slight stutter (kinda like mumbling) or something along those lines (which people tell me is hard to notice, but I seem to notice it a lot), that I find really annoying when I talk to someone. Sometimes I can say a complete sentence without screwing up, but other times I just fumble every second word.

I find it hard to say somethings like, for e.g. "Josh sucks!" or "Douche says what?"… Probably because of the "shh" and "ess" sounds very close to each other (Don’t ask where I got those sentences from), but for some reason I can’t say the words together without pausing. But thats all I really have trouble with pronouncing, everything else I have no idea why I mess up.

I really want to become a pilot when I get older and if I can’t talk strait I might not be able to pass selection…

If anyone has any ideas of what I could do, or a speech therapist that could give me some ideas of what I could do to calm it down or completely stop it PLEASE TELL ME!

I’ve been stuttering. Will speech therapy cure this?

I’ve noticed that I have been stuttering a lot, especially when I am really excited. In many cases, I would get overly excited about something and my sentences would make no sense. Or, I would pause a lot (or say "like" many times) in the middle of a sentence because I either forgot what i was saying or I don’t even know what I am saying. I just blank out :( So what do you guys think?

There is no "cure" for stuttering, at least not for stutterers who stutter because of genetics. If you haven’t always stuttered, you may need to destress or get more rest. Find out more at www.stutteringhelp.org

is there a real cure for stuttering?

There is not a "cure" for stuttering, but there are many things that help different people. Some respond to one thing better and some respond to others. A speech therapist trained to work with those who stutter is what you should look for. Some of the therapists used to stutter themselves so they know exactly what you are facing. There is a study being done on Pagoclone that might help some people. Medications have side effects, though.

The Stuttering Foundation has a list of speech therapist who are trained to work with stutterers. They list summer and intensive workshops, too. Look under "referrals" on their web site.

"Self Therapy for the Stutterer" published by The Stuttering Foundation of America worked wonders for my family members who stuttered after working through it step by step. The book can be found here http://www.stutteringhelp.org/Portals/English/Book_0012_tenth_ed.pdf

Some medications that other stutterers have tried include lorazepam, citalopram, celexa, and buspar. Ask your doctor about trying an anti-anxiety medication while you are working on your stuttering. Be aware that your stuttering may be better than the side-effects of the medication, though.

Each stutterer is different, and a therapist who specializes in treating stuttering will be able to determine what will help you the most as they work with you.

The Foundation also has a list of speech therapists who have been trained to work with stutterers

My uncles who stuttered said that they stuttered worse when they tried NOT to stutter, when they were under stress, and when they were very tired. Try concentrating on what you are saying rather than how you are talking, eliminating as much stress from your life as you can, getting plenty of rest, plus working on your speech using a therapist, the self therapy book, or watching The Stuttering Foundation’s videos and using the things you learn every day.

Shaun’s vlog #4 – A temporary cure for stuttering?

I use a technique called Costal breathing, or known as your singing breathe. It’s a series of deep breathes then I talk while exhaling. This kind of breathing does cause chest pains because of constant deep breathes, probably wouldn’t cause pain to those who sing for a hobby.

Is there a cure for stuttering? Hypnosis or anything?

My sister had this problem, and gradually overcame it with time, like from 8 to 23 years. Check with your family doctor for advice. Hypnosis can help a lot of things, but so can removing or easing the cause of the stutter. Don’t know how old you are, or your situation, but growing up with a forceful, demanding parent is a typical cause – you can feel so self-conscious, fearful, inadequate, ridiculed, and embarrassed, that you are, in fact, afraid to speak. There can be a physical cause, I don’t know – I only know about my sister and our overbearing parents. I wish you well.

what is the cure for stammering or stuttering?

please help I want the cure not some talking

There is no cure. Several of my uncles and cousins stutter. The one who overcame most of his went to a speech therapist listed on the Stuttering Foundation’s web site as they specializing in treating stuttering. Others who couldn’t afford a therapist got some of the foundations brochures and a book called "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" and practiced, practiced, practiced. Watch their DVDs and you’ll see some former stutterers who became speech therapists so they could help other people going through the same thing they went through. It can be overcome! The SpeakEasy device is not a cure as when to remove it, you will still stutter. It helps some people, but they have to always have it in – they haven’t mastered their stuttering. My family couldn’t/wouldn’t go to the expense for that; they didn’t want a "crutch" – they wanted to do the work needed to become the most fluent they could.
