Knotted Tongues: Stuttering in History and the Quest for a Cure

Bobrick, a stutterer himself, writes a fascinating historical overview of both the famous stutterers in history (Greek orator Demosthenes, Winston Churchill, Nai Bevan) and reviews the “cures” on offer through the ages. I am similarly afflicted and found the book fascinating.

KKeep in mind though, that if you're looking to learn about the causes and therapies and in-depth experiences with stuttering, this book will not fulfill that venue. This is a book on history and the interesting and absurd methods of “curing” the stutter that were utilized. At any rate, if you are a stutterer and you want to see that you're not alone, please pick up a copy of this book.

This book is a fairly interesting history of stuttering. Benson Bobrick takes a look at historical figures who have stuttered, a list which includes Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Moses, and the Greek speaker Demosthenes. Knotted Tongues is a look at how stuttering was perceived throughout history and how stuttering has been treated.

How can I control my speech to stop stuttering?

I have trouble as a little stutter to where I think what I’m going to say but can’t actually say it I have to either close my eyes and say it or look away to say it when I’m talking to someone directly.

Stuttering is treated with Speech Therapy.. There are many schools for the same where they offer short courses of speech therapy.. where u can improve ur speech..

Cure for Stuttering?

I have a slight stutter (kinda like mumbling) or something along those lines (which people tell me is hard to notice, but I seem to notice it a lot), that I find really annoying when I talk to someone. Sometimes I can say a complete sentence without screwing up, but other times I just fumble every second word.

I find it hard to say somethings like, for e.g. "Josh sucks!" or "Douche says what?"… Probably because of the "shh" and "ess" sounds very close to each other (Don’t ask where I got those sentences from), but for some reason I can’t say the words together without pausing. But thats all I really have trouble with pronouncing, everything else I have no idea why I mess up.

I really want to become a pilot when I get older and if I can’t talk strait I might not be able to pass selection…

If anyone has any ideas of what I could do, or a speech therapist that could give me some ideas of what I could do to calm it down or completely stop it PLEASE TELL ME!

Stuttering….any advice.?

Does anybody know a cure for stuttering. I’ve been through 10yrs of speech therapy and have even tried an auditory feedback device (speech easy) nothing seems to work. Stuttering runs in my family my father has outgrown his and my sisters still have theirs but not as extreme. Any suggestions?

How can you stop stuttering? Are there any drugs to fix the problem?

Being a mental problem, it has always been hard for me to cope with the stuttering issue. Even though I had received treatment since I was young,I still have areas where this speech deficiency becomes a habit and an annoyance. Its mostly in situations where I’m nervous or I’m stressed. Its hard to live with, because its not a problem that is temporary but all through your life. Imagine yourself trying to socialize, even handling the simple manners of a phone call, and how at the exact moment when your going to speak you start to stutter. Its very hard, something that can destroy your social life, and the reason why I need answers.

There are some medications that other stutterers have tried, but most from posts I have read, have decided that the stuttering was better than the side effects of the medication. Some medications that other stutterers have tried include lorazepam, citalopram, celexa, and buspar.
